Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid within the body. Lymph fluid normally assists in the body’s removal of waste products, filtration, and maintenance of fluid balance. Lymphedema results in swelling of a body part, most often the arm or leg; however, it may also occur in the face, trunk, abdomen, or genital area.
Once present, this chronic and progressive condition can not be cured. Lymphedema can often develop 5-20 years after breast cancer surgery and radiation.
